Within weeks, the two-year-old US Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is set to run out of funds, and Congress appears unlikely to authorize more. Even as many older and rural Americans may be thrust into financial hardship due to the ACP’s collapse, indigenous communities could fare even worse. Because tribal members can now work remotely, they are no longer forced to move away from their communities to seek opportunity, they told CNN. For example, Mitchell said, after decades of decline in Mohawk fluency, a growing number of tribal members are now involved in online language immersion. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) Seth Wenig/AP/FileInstead, some say, the collapse of the ACP will become another stain on the US government’s centuries-long track record of breaking promises to tribal communities.

The most dismal assessment, though, is that of Canadian journalist Stephen Marche who, in his 2022 book, The Next Civil War: Dispatches form the American Future, contends that a new American civil war is inevitable. Remember that the United States leads the world — by far — in the number of firearms in private hands. There are an estimated 393 million privately held firearms in the United States — more than one gun per person. In fact, there are more civilian-held guns in the United States than the other top 25 countries in the world combined. Indeed, more guns were purchased in the United States in 2020 — nearly 23 million — than any other year on record.

CNN —The popularity of the famous French delicacy of cuisses de grenouille, or frogs’ legs, is threatening the existence of certain frog species, a group of more than 500 environmental campaigners has warned French President Emmanuel Macron. A joint study by Robin des Bois and Pro Wildlife found that France alone consumes more than 3,000 tons of frozen frogs’ legs a year. Vietnam is also a large exporter of frogs’ legs, but these frogs are typically farmed rather than wild, according to a media statement accompanying the letter. “But the EU still tolerates the collection of millions of animals in other countries – even if this threatens the frog populations there. The signatories called on France to develop proposals to protect declining frog species, and to ensure that the monitoring, regulation and sustainability of the trade in frogs’ legs is governed by international trade rules.

Could President Biden, who claims to have labor-friendly policies, be the one to turn the tide by appealing to the White working class and giving his party a much-needed electoral boost in the process? After all, issues affecting poor White voters, such as health care, higher education and increased access to childcare have long been traditional Democratic priorities. That gaffe echoed Obama’s off-the-cuff remark in 2008 that “bitter” low-income voters “cling to guns or religion” — comments that didn’t endear him to the White working class, either. Some White voters of modest means perceive Democrats as being determined to secure equality for minority groups at their expense. And working-class White Americans tended for some reason not to perceive Obamacare — the president’s signature social policy achievement — as immediately benefiting them.

New York CNN —As with many Target trips, Nevada US history teacher Tierra Espy left the store with more items than she intended to buy on Sunday. She added a magnetic activity book about iconic Civil Rights leaders to her cart, in time for Black History Month, she told CNN in a phone interview. But now, Target is pulling the item off shelves after a viral TikTok in which Espy pointed out inaccuracies such as misidentifying names and pictures of iconic Civil Rights leaders. The magnetic book was displayed next to other educational items for Black History month. “They’re expecting us not to notice the mistakes, and it’s heartbreaking as somebody who knows the mistakes and has seen it,” the history teacher said.

And underpinning that racism is what Wilkerson refers to as a caste system so effective at preserving the domination of White people over everyone else that the Nazis were inspired by it. Caste, Wilkerson says, is the system that creates subjugation. We watch Isabel exploring Germany’s poignant memorials to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, discussing in one scene how successfully post-war Germany condemned its 12-year caste system to the past. Among Black Americans, attitudes to race are evolving. Every single one of us has skin in the game, for, as Wilkerson points out, the caste system diminishes us all, wherever we may sit in its fabricated hierarchy.

BERTRAND GUAY/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsPARIS, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Six teenagers go on trial behind closed doors on Monday, accused of involvement in the beheading of French history teacher Samuel Paty by a suspected Islamist in 2020 in an attack that struck at the heart of the country's secular values. The teacher had shown his pupils cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in a class on freedom of expression, angering a number of Muslim parents. One of the minors is a 15-year-old girl who allegedly told her parents that Paty had shown caricatures of the prophet in her class. All six minors were referred to the children's court and could face 2.5 years in prison.

Frederick Wiseman’s transporting documentary “Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros,” centers on a dynasty of French chefs who live and work in a pastoral region in central France named Ouches, some 65 miles west of Lyon. The chef Daniel Boulud includes the Troisgros salmon recipe in several of his cookbooks. “Menus-Plaisirs” is Wiseman’s 44th documentary and the first that he’s made since “City Hall” (2020), which notionally focuses on the administration building for the city of Boston. (In between “City Hall” and “Menus-Plaisirs,” he made one of his rare forays into fiction, “A Couple,” about Sophia Tolstoy.) Wiseman directed, edited and served as one of the producers on “Menus-Plaisirs,” which runs a heroic four hours (about a half-hour shorter than “City Hall”!).

A heavy irony hangs over Michael Richards’s work: The artist known for images of pilots, airplanes, wings and targets died, age 38, in the Sept. 11 attacks. He had spent the night in his studio on the 92nd floor of the World Trade Center’s north tower. But it’s likely that, had he lived, we would still be discussing Richards’s sculpture. In his handful of active years, he was beloved by curators and peers, and found consistent institutional support. Dread Scott, an artist and friend of Richards’s, recalled their conversations ranging over “W.E.B.

AdvertisementAdvertisementThis has been a bit of a secret, but when I applied to Yale, I chose to apply as an African American-studies major on a whim. Regardless, part of me thinks I got in because I'm Black and chose the smaller major of African American studies. I'm now working extra hard to prove I belong at Yale. The fact that I didn't get into Princeton made me think my Yale acceptance wasn't guaranteed. I could have edged out a more qualified candidate who was not a person of color because I'm Black.

Melt the world away, lose its details, dissolve its borders; it doesn’t sound like such an unwelcome prospect right now. The most substantial Mark Rothko retrospective in a generation has opened at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, and it is a show of monumental dispersion: a pull-out-all-the-stops blockbuster where life passes into vapor. From 1949, when his early figurative pictures finally liquefied into stains of translucent color, Rothko painted with no allusions, no particulars. A lot of people find his large paintings consoling, or seek the Romantic sublime in the depths of his reds and violets. “Behind the color lies the cataclysm,” he said in 1959 — a citation that rarely makes the auction preview catalogs.

Just as our bodies develop and change, so can our relationship to things spiritual, leading us sometimes to set aside organized religion. For African Americans, in particular, adult faith is complicated by the way certain understandings of Christianity were used to justify our ancestors’ enslavement. Du Bois, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes and Richard Wright, often had very conflicted relationships with Christianity if not hostility toward it. The Black literary canon is a beautiful thing, a hard-wrought wonder. Maybe it started when “master’s preacher” told the enslaved that God destined them to be docile and obedient.

Anti-black racism and white supremacy are frequent topics of research in history, law, anthropology, economics, sociology and religion. Racism resides in the mind, the heart, twisted imaginations and long-festering resentments that surge in times of perceived loss of power. Addressing anti-Black violence would require that we take seriously the disease of racism that has infected our Republic since its founding. You can close all the doors and shut the windows, but the truth will seep in through vents and chimneys. Americans must let the truth into the house or it will suffocate itself on the toxic fumes of malice and false memories.

As a kid in the 1970s, even one attending private schools, I was directed to drive by poetry slowly now and then, but rarely to actually stop and take it in deeply. Today, while vanishingly few people are up for reciting poems such as Joyce Kilmer’s “Trees” or Tennyson’s “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” vast numbers can eagerly and effortlessly recite hip-hop lyrics. But true verse of the kind featured in hip-hop — poetry that does not rely on melody or harmony — centers the word alone. In contrast to the synergy of song and word, verse is an especially heightened form of language alone. Rap is verse poetry, in all of its verbal richness and rhythmic variety, a deft stylization of speech into art.

In January, Pinellas school district officials yanked Toni Morrison’s classic novel “The Bluest Eye” from high schools after a parent complained about a two-page rape scene. But in counties like Pinellas, his policies and rhetoric have already had what his critics believe is their intended effect. She objected to parts of the syllabus Mr. Robinson had distributed to his class on African-American history, which her son had briefly enrolled in. “I don’t stop my class and ask my white kids, ‘Hey, how are you feeling?’ What kind of teacher would do that?” Mr. Robinson said. For example, at the same time that white supremacist authors were writing slavery apologia for student instruction, scholars like W.E.B. Du Bois were taking note of the skills and agency of enslaved Africans for a very different purpose. Continually runaway slaves are described as speaking very good English; sometimes as speaking not only English but Dutch and French. The difference between these accounts and those of the slavery apologists, however, is that Du Bois, Woodson and their contemporaries never implied or suggested that chattel slavery was anything less than a crime. Where apologists dismissed or disparaged the efforts, radical and otherwise, to end slavery, Du Bois, Woodson and others gave them pride of place in their histories and narratives about the peculiar institution.

There were at least 19 Black scientists and technicians who worked on the Manhattan Project. In the labs, there were at least 19 Black scientists and technicians among the 400 or so scientists employed by the project. The project was unique for bringing together "colored and white, Christian and Jew" for a common cause, Arthur Compton, the Manhattan Project director in Chicago, said. The Manhattan Project did create opportunities for Black Americans' advancements, but many Black workers grappled with Jim Crow segregation. Many Black scientists involved in the Manhattan Project went on to build careers that advanced technology and expanded opportunities for other Black scientists.

Can Couture Be More Socially Responsible?

On a cold evening in March, a cement-floored warehouse in the gritty Paris suburb of Fontenay-sous-Bois played host to a different kind of couture fashion show. A third was dressed in a white silk strapless gown, gathered on the hip, that was embroidered with blue and pink posies. Unlike traditional couture, as presented on runways in Paris this week, these clothes weren’t sewn by seasoned artisans or made from precious new materials. The bronze jacket was fashioned from a secondhand pair of Etro men’s pants and embroidered with thin chains from a company that had gone bankrupt. The tangerine dress was made from neckties of decommissioned uniforms of the Aéroports de Paris.
